Woodrow Wilson Bridge Replacement
The Woodrow Wilson Bridge project is the largest public works project in the mid-Atlantic region. The seven and a half mile long VDOT and FHWA project replaced the current bridge and four interchanges adjacent to the crossing that are important to its efficient operation. Built in 1961, the four-lane bridge was designed to carry 75,000 vehicles a day over the next twenty years.
The Bridge reached that design volume in eight years, and today carries nearly three times its original intended traffic volume – almost 200,000 vehicles a day. Bridge improvements have been under consideration since the late 1980’s. The demand projections for a crossing of the Potomac River are great due to the extensive development in Maryland and Virginia suburbs as well as the renaissance in Washington, D.C.
NXL provided construction inspection/administration and engineering services on this bascule bridge replacement project. NXL has provided construction management services and personnel on various levels: Utility Coordinator, Chief Geometry Control Engineer, Structural Engineer, Assistant Resident Engineer, Post Tensioning Engineer as well as Construction Inspectors and Senior Construction Inspectors.
