NXL recently responded to the emergency repair of the CSX Transportation Anacostia River Bridge in Washington D.C. The bridge span exceeds 1100 feet across the Anacostia River and is CSXT’s major rail corridor for the east coast.
NXL’s field data collection was conducted during ongoing repair operations with multiple cranes, barges, and rail repair vehicles on location. Safety and coordination with CSXT personnel was a daily consideration that NXL’s field crew handled well.
NXL conducted detailed topographic field survey of the existing bridge, to include both old structures and temporary repair features. Well over one thousand points were located to provide an accurate depiction of existing bridge lift columns, deck structure, top of rail, and associated pilings and wing walls associated with the main channel. Elevations were critical for the reconstruction design to utilize existing permanent structures such as the bridge abutment walls and the concrete piling bases at the span opening. Three-dimensional mapping files were prepared for the design of a more permanent solution to the bridge failure.
