Herbert C. Bonner Bridge Replacement
NXL provided Construction Inspection services on this $250 Million mega-project. This projects was for the Bonner Bridge which carries N.C. 12 over the Oregon Inlet between Hatteras and Bodie islands. This bridge was well past its design life and was replaced with a new bridge that will better withstand its coastal environment. NXL’s senior construction inspector focused on the superstructure on the northern approach and provided additional support as needed with the pile and superstructure inspections.
The 3.56 mile long bridge carries N.C. 12 over the Oregon Inlet between Hatteras and Bodie islands and is the only highway connection between Hatteras Island and mainland North Carolina. Designed by PCL, the new bridge was constructed using high-durability concrete, stainless reinforced steel and other engineering features and was designed to have 100-year life span. Using high-durability concrete, stainless reinforcing steel and other engineering features, the new bridge has a 100-year life span and will provide more options for navigation under the bridge.
The project was broken into three segments: the north and south approaches and the navigational spans. Phase I of the project included building the new bridge just west of where the Bonner Bridge previously stood. Phase II of the project included implementing permanent solutions for breaches caused by Hurricane Irene in 2011.
